Artificial propagation of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus): the application of a single dose of pellets containing D-Ala6,Pro9NEt-mGnRH and dopamine inhibitor metoclopramide

Abstract: The satisfactory results of ovulation stimulation with Ovopel observed in various fish species (see a review in Brzuska, 2001) and numerous merits of this preparation (i.e. the possibility of precise dosing without weighing the stimulator, the simple method of its preparation for the treatment of fish, the elimination of an additional injection of dopamine receptor blocker, and the possibility of repeated application aer a short interval if no ovulation occurs) distinctly show its high value. Ovopel contains … Show more

“…According to our results, artificial conditions at the fish culture station of Szarvas Fish Ltd. did not have any negative impact on egg quality. Mean fertilization rate values from our experiments are also comparable to those from other breeding experiments on the European catfish (Brzuska and Adamek, 1999;Brzuska, 2001;2003).…”

“…The preparation containing mammalian GnRH analogue and metoclopramide was completely ineffective in jundiá though it has been successfully used in breeding cyprinids (Horváth, Szabó & Burke ; Kucharczyk, Targońska, Hliwa, Gomułka, Kwiatkowski, Krejszeff & Perkowski ). Ovopel has also been successfully used to induce ovulation in European catfish ( Silurus glanis ) (Brzuska ) and African catfish ( Clarias gariepinus ) (Brzuska ).…”

“…Demand for fish in both rural and urban areas is very high and continues to grow in Tanzania by FAO in 2007 [1]. The African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) has gained popularity in the aquaculture sector of Tanzania in the recent times [2,3]. Its demand has increased as food, control of over-population in tilapia ponds and as bait for the Nile perch fishery [4][5][6][7].…”
