Article Review on Vectran-Super Fiber from Thermotropic Crystals of Rigid-Rod Polymer

Abstract: According to the economic and environmental perspective, multifilament Vectran, yarn spun from liquid crystal polymer, is important because of its quite simple processing during spinning in a wide range of injection moulding, extrusion moulding, and melt spinning. Vectran fiber is an aromatic polyester spun from a liquid crystal polymer in a melt extrusion process. This process orients the molecules along the fiber axis, resulting in a high tenacity fiber, and Vectran melts at 330°C. Heat treatment can improve… Show more

“…Coextrusion of TMCPs and conventional thermoplastics results in self-reinforced composites or composites in situ [9][10][11][12][13][14]. The mechanical properties of TMCP fibers are comparable to that of aramid fibers [6]. It should be noted, water absorption and atmosphere stability of TMCPs are significantly higher than that of aramid fibers.…”

“…Thermotropic main-chain polyesters (TMCPs) belongs to a class of high-performance polymer with a number of unique properties [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. TMCP backbone contains aromatic rigid units such as 1,4phenylene, 2,6-naphthalene and 4,4′-biphenylene, defining the formation of highly ordered nematic melts.…”

“…Thermotropic main-chain polyesters (TMCPs) are a class of high-performance polymers with a number of unique properties [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. TMCPs are capable of forming highly ordered liquid crystalline melts and do not require solvents during processing, unlike materials produced from lyotropic solutions such as aramid fibers.…”

The mechanical properties of TMCP fibers are comparable to those of aramid fibers [ 6 , 15 , 16 ]. For instance, the tensile strength of Vectran HS fibers was found to be ~3 GPa [ 15 ].…”
