Arthroscopic ganglionectomy of the foot and ankle

Abstract: Arthroscopic ganglionectomy of the foot and ankle ganglion by either internal drainage or complete resection is a feasible approach. Good results can be achieved in case of adequate internal drainage of the ganglion to the joints or fibrous tendon sheath.

“…However, the rate of recurrence after surgical excision is reported at 43% . This rate appears to be further influenced by the distribution of ganglion across and within anatomic sites . For example, recurrence rates are highest in the foot and within the dorsum of the foot, specifically .…”

“…In case the sac is adherent to the skin, resection of part of the tendon sheath can also be performed to achieve internal drainage of the sac to the tendon sheath. 22 In both situations, there is potential risk of seeding of diseased synovium or loose bodies into the peroneal tendon sheath, leading to secondary tenosynovial chondromatosis. However, the risk is minimized by complete synovectomy and removal of loose bodies before resection of the bursal sac.…”
