Arthropod semiochemicals: mosquitoes, midges and sealice

Abstract: Signalling chemicals play an essential role in arthropod life cycles. They provide the means whereby mates, host and oviposition sites are located and recognized. The identification of such semiochemicals (sex pheromones, host location and habitat-related cues) in mosquitoes, midges and sealice of farmed salmon is revealing ways in which such devastating pests may be monitored and controlled by behavioural means using push-pull strategies to manipulate the pests away from hosts and into traps.

“…Chemoreception is a major sensory modality in all arthropods and chemical cues are of fundamental importance in locating food, hosts and mates, for example, in decapods (Grasso & Basil 2002; Keller, Powell & Weissburg 2003) and copepods (Strickler 1998; Weissburg & Doall 1998; Mordue (Luntz) 2003; Pino‐Marambio et al. 2007).…”

“…Most of the published literature on 1-octen-3-ol concerns either its properties as a mushroom flavor compound (Zawirska-Wojtasiak 2004) or its importance in attracting biting insects (Bernier et al 2000; Luntz 2001). In both of these cases, the R enantiomer (“roctonal”) is the active component.…”

“…In addition to fungi, this VOC is detected from a widespread group of animals and plants (Bernier et al 2000; Ramoni et al 2001; Maggi et al 2010). In insects, it functions as a signaling molecule (semiochemical), especially in mediating host location cues for flies, mosquitoes, and mites where it orients biting flies and other blood-sucking arthropods to their hosts (Luntz 2001). Along with CO 2 it is the compound that attracts malaria mosquitoes and can be used as a bait in mosquito traps (Nilssen 1998).…”

“…Semiochemicals are naturally occurring behaviour‐modifying chemicals that are used by a range of arthropods in chemical communication to locate a host, mate or oviposition site (Mordue (Luntz) );. The use of semiochemicals for pest control in agriculture is well established, for example as part of a push‐pull strategy where pests are pushed away from crops and pulled towards traps or targets, where they are removed from the environment (Cook, Khan & Pickett ; Hassanali et al .…”
