Arteriovenous malformation of the mandible and parotid gland

Abstract: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the jaws are relatively rare, with fewer than 200 cases reported in the literature. Their real importance lies in their potential to result in exsanguination, which usually follows an unrelated treatment, such as tooth extraction, surgical intervention, puncture wound or blunt injury in involved areas, with the dentist unaware of the existence of the AVM. The present case illustrates an AVM in an 18-year-old female with swelling on the right side of the face. This case rep… Show more

“…[12] Both the lesions are easily compressible. [2,3,7,[14][15][16] Purely venous and purely lymphatic malformations are rare, and they generally occur in combination. Venous malformation has the tendency to expand and contract with the change of patient's posture as it is a dependent lesion.…”

“…High-flow lesions show typical signal flow voids both in T1-weighted and T2-weighted sequences with the appearance of serpentine images. [ 13 ] In the present case, MRI was able to identify the kind of flow, i.e., high flow as well as the origin of the vessels, i.e., external carotid artery.…”

“…It delineates vascular structure, permitting the differentiation between high-ow and low-ow lesions. High-ow lesions show typical signal ow voids both in T1-weighted and T2-weighted sequences with serpentine images 11 . In the present case, MRI was able to identify the kind of ow, high ow as well as the origin of the vessels which were branches of external carotid artery.…”
