Arterial Vascularization and Morphological Characteristics of Adrenal Glands in the Pampas Deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus, Linnaeus 1758)

Abstract: This research presents morphological characteristics of adrenal glands and a demonstration of arterial vascularization in the Pampas deer, which is considered to be in extreme danger of extinction. A total of ten deer constituted the material of the study. Vascularization of organs was investigated by using latex injection technique. Left adrenal glands were basically supplied by coeliac, cranial mesenteric, renal and lumbal arteries. The arterial vascularization of the left adrenal glands was very complex in … Show more

“…Erdoğan and Pérez [ 13 ] described the shape of the adrenal glands in the pampas deer and found inter-individual differences in the shape of the left gland. Two of the ten studied deer had a V- or heart-shaped left gland, while the remaining eight animals had an oval shaped one.…”

“…The studies carried out in the pampas deer by Erdoğan and Pérez [ 13 ] revealed that the right adrenal gland mean weight was 0.59 ± 0.09 g, and the mean weight of the left adrenal gland was 0.64 ± 0.1 g. The mean length and width of the left adrenal gland (18.04 ± 0.94 mm, 11.83 ± 0.81 mm) was larger than the right gland (17.3 ± 1.58 mm, 10.11 ± 0.42 mm). The mean thickness of the right adrenal gland (5.11 ± 0.45 mm) was greater than that of the left gland (4.59 ± 0.31 mm).…”

“…Cardiac anatomic studies and those related to heart vessels have been performed on both domestic and wild species. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] The studies conducted with Ozotoceros bezoarticus regarding arterial blood supply include the arterial supply of the head and neck, 12 arterial irrigation of the pelvis and the pelvic limb, 13 arterial distribution of the aortic arch, 9 arterial vascularization of the adrenal glands, 8 anatomy of the female reproductive system, 14 anatomy of the male reproductive system, 15 and irrigation of the stomach and intestine. 16 According to our knowledge, there is no anatomical description of the heart of the pampas deer.…”

“…Bat tongues show great variability in size and shape and in the features of the lingual papillae on the dorsal surface (Kilinc, Erdogan, Ketani, & Ketani, 2010; Shindo, Yoshimura, & Kobayashi, 2006). This variation in the distribution pattern, number and surface structure of the papillae is most marked between taxonomic ranks, such as orders and families, but sometimes also vary among species (Erdoğan & Pérez, 2014; Jackowiak, 2006; Kilinc et al, 2010).…”
