This article is about the research of digital narrative methods and technics aiming at their application with the usage of augmented reality (AR) technology. Result of the research is the design and development of an AR application of digital narrative, for outdoor usage, and in particular onto a façade of a building in the city of Thessaloniki. Firstly, the characteristics of augmented reality technology are investigated, in order to define its technical capabilities and the type of content that can be used. In addition, other means of digital narrative are examined with the intention of defining the methods of narration that are used and the way these can be transferred or adjusted in augmented reality. Additionally, examples of existing AR narrative applications are studied, in order to outline methods that are already tested. Next, the available software for creating AR applications are presented, in order to locate the ones that can be used best for outdoor usage and large object recognition. The article continues with the description of the design and development of the AR application of digital narrative, the narrative methods that are used and the technical problems encountered. Finally, an evaluation of usability and content is conducted, through questionnaire, and the results are presented.

People use various techniques and tools to perform spatial navigation tasks, such as asking a local person for instructions in order to reach a destination or creating a detailed route plan for their trip through technology-mediated tools. Novel technologies, such as augmented reality, have been introduced to improve the performance and enhance the experience of the end-users. To provide navigation experiences with improved accuracy and decent stability, the developers of such tools can use persistent spatial points, which are stationary points in the real world that an augmented-reality system should keep track of over time. However, the use of persistent spatial points can dramatically increase the development effort, as it requires additional and time-consuming actions to be made by the developers. In this paper, we investigate the use of persistent spatial points for navigation in an AR environment from a developer and an end-user perspective, aiming to understand the tradeoff between the development effort, the user performance, and the user experience. We report an empirical study in which a software engineer developed two versions of an augmented-reality navigation application (one with persistent spatial points and one without) which were used by twenty-eight individuals to navigate. Our study results revealed a trade-off between the development effort, the user performance, and the user experience, which depends on the length of the navigation path. The shorter the path is, the less the need for persistent spatial points is, while, on the other hand, the longer the path is, the more critical it is to use persisting spatial points. Based on the results, we discuss ways of mitigating the development effort while maintaining high user performance and experience.

Over the years, the various mediums available for storytelling have progressively expanded, from spoken to written word, then to film, and now to Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). In 2016, the cutting-edge Head-Mounted Display (HMD) AR Microsoft HoloLens was released. However, though it has been several years, the quality of the user experience with narration using HMD-based AR technology has been rarely discussed. The present study explored interactive narrative in HMD-based AR regarding different user interfaces and their influence on users’ presence, narrative engagement and reflection. Inspired by an existing exhibition at the National Holocaust Centre and Museum in the U.K., a HoloLens narrative application, entitled The AR Journey, was developed by the authors using two different interaction methods, Natural User Interface (NUI) and Graphical User Interface (GUI), which were used to perform an empirical study. As revealed from the results of the between-subject design experiment, NUI exhibited statistically significant advantages in creating presence for users without 3D Role Playing Game (RPG) experience, and GUI was superior in creating presence and increasing narrative engagement for users with 3D RPG experience. As indicated by the results of the interviews, the overall narrative experience in HMD-based AR was acceptable, and the branching narrative design was engaging. However, HoloLens hardware issues, as well as virtuality and reality mismatch, adversely affected user experience. Design guidelines were proposed according to the qualitative results.
