Arene guest selectivity and pore flexibility in a metal–organic framework with semi-fluorinated channel walls

Abstract: A metal–organic framework (MOF) with one-dimensional channels of approximately hexagonal cross-section [Ag2(O2CCF2CF2CO2)(TMP)] 1 (TMP =2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine) has been synthesized with MeOH filling the channels in its as-synthesized form as [Ag2(O2CCF2CF2CO2)(TMP)]·n(MeOH) 1-MeOH (n = 1.625 by X-ray crystallography). The two types of ligand connect columns of Ag(I) centres in an alternating manner, both around the channels and along their length, leading to an alternating arrangement of hydrocarbon (C–H)… Show more

“…For pharmaceutical applications, not only the toxicological compatibility but also the quality, especially the purity of MOFs should be well controlled by established methodologies. Powder XRD is the most commonly used technique to measure the crystalline purity of MOFs, such as the crystallinity, phase purity and crystal phases inside materials 279 , 280 . Pure-phase crystalline or multiphase MOFs materials could be identified by powder XRD.…”

“…Such structures can be constructed by structural engineering/tuning the size and shape of the pores. 212 In addition, ligands with higher chain mobility, for example, carboxylate ligands with flexible fluoroalkyl chains, can enhance the structural flexibility of the resulting MOFs. One of the new methods for the synthesis of flexible MOFs is the mixed-ligand synthesis strategy.…”

“…Brammer and co-workers [15] pick up this theme in a study of porous silver(I) MOFs that selectively adsorb arene and fluoroarene molecules in contrast to alkanes and perfluoroalkanes. Such selectivity is highly important in the development of materials that can ultimately be used in the purification of small organic molecules.…”
