Area‐wide diabetes care: the Lanarkshire experience with primary health care teams 1994–1997

Abstract: In Lanarkshire (population 560,000) an area-wide diabetes database was introduced and process of care was measured. The number of patients with diabetes identified was 11,621 (prevalence = 2.08). In 1997 50% of the diabetic population were reviewed at least once during the year. Compared to those attending hospital clinics, GP patients were significantly older, female and less likely to be on insulin. The Dorset Diabetes Audit has been performed on an annual basis since 1993, with the first three years showing improvements in diabetes care (Table 1), although the numbers of practices involved were small, and the data currently available incomplete, so that only estimates can be made.…”

“…Less is known, however, about corresponding gender differences in the treatment of patients with diabetes, i.e. a growing number of patients usually followed in primary health care (PHC) (4). Further elucidation is required because the risk of macrovascular diabetes complications is generally regarded to be about equally high in both genders.…”

The prevalence in other studies from the UK has been reported as 30.3% in Exeter 11 (EDRS), 40.4% in the Liverpool Diabetic Eye Study 12 (LDES), 41% in insulin-requiring subjects, 13 and 50% in noninsulinrequiring diabetics 14 in the Melton Mowbray Study (MMS).…”
