Are Vaspin and Omentin-1 Related to Insulin Resistance, Blood Pressure and Inflammation in NAFLD Patients?

Abstract: SummaryBackgroundNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the hepatic manifestation of insulin resistance, is the most common cause of chronic liver. The present study aimed to investigate the roles of vaspin and omentin-1 in the NAFLD-related pathology including IR, inflammation and elevated blood pressure.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted among 83 NAFLD patients in Jahrom, Iran. Plasma levels of omentin-1, vaspin, hs-CRP and IL-6 were measured. Anthropometric indices, lipid profiles, liver en… Show more

“…Izadi et al found that omentin-1 levels positively correlated with the NAFLD severity (29). In another study conducted by Aliasghari et al, serum omentin level was found to be high in patients with NAFLD (30). In this study, we found a correlation in the same direction between omentin-1 and BMI in obese adolescents with NAFLD.…”

“…Similarly, another study has confirmed that normal ALT activities were observed in 79% of subjects with hepatic steatosis (24). Although ALT exists in two isoforms in humans (25, 26), the ALT2 isoform makes the main contribution to homeostasis of free fatty acids (FFA), being highly expressed in adipose tissue of obese individuals (25). In addition, increased lipid peroxidation can cause the ALT to leak more easily out of the hepatocytes.…”

“…In addition, increased lipid peroxidation can cause the ALT to leak more easily out of the hepatocytes. Moreover, it is assumed that increased ALT activity in circulation may also be a result of the compensatory response to the impaired hepatic insulin signalling (25).…”

“…In contrast, there was a close relation between serum vaspin and insulin resistance in Japanese subjects (31), and insulin resistance has an influence on the correlations between changes in serum vaspin concentration (32). A significant positive correlation between vaspin and HOMA-IR was also seen in studies done in Iran (10,33).…”
