Abstract: Universities are accused of being left-wing bastions, unwelcoming to conservative and right-wing professors. However, we know little about the political orientation of professors in comparison to other professionals, which would be the right comparison group if we want to know whether universities are potentially hostile environments to conservatives. Examining culturally and economically oriented political orientations in Europe, it is demonstrated that professors are more liberal and left-leaning than other … Show more

“…The measured political orientation is, however, quite skewed: 75% of the respondents see themselves as leftleaning (0-39 pts), 21% in the middle (40-59 pts) and 4% as right-leaning (60-100 pts). 4 This distribution is in line with a European study of the political orientation of professors by Van de Werfhorst (2020) and has also been documented in American academic settings, where social scientists are known for placing themselves on the left of the political spectrum (Gross and Fosse 2012). Finally, we expect that concerns about gender inequality and discrimination (based on gender) may be affected by the gender of respondents.…”

“…Several surveys suggest that the social sciences, arts, and humanities currently contain a vast majority of progressives among faculty (Yancey 2011;Inbar and Lammers 2012;Honeycutt and Freberg 2017;Peters et al 2020). And while there might be differences between fields, countries, and disciplines, in the empirical research on political diversity in academia, there is little doubt that, overall, academia does at the moment mostly contain progressive faculty (Gross and Fosse 2012;Cholbi 2014;Bailey and O'Leary 2017;van de Werfhorst 2020). ( P1) is thus a plausible assumption.…”

“…The establishment of a new Israeli research university in the occupied West Bank counters calls for an international boycott of Israeli institutions (Bamberger et al., 2019). Moreover, echoing right‐wing voices abroad, Israeli right‐wing politicians often accuse Israeli universities of being non‐patriotic, politicised, and relying on a foreign agenda (van de Werfhorst, 2019).…”
