Are trade and transport logistics activities mutually reinforcing? Some empirical evidences from ASEAN countries

Abstract: Both trade and transport logistics activities have impressively flourished among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries over the past decades. Based on these observations, this paper conjectures that trade liberalization and transport logistics development are mutually reinforced. Elimination of internal tariff in the free trade area facilitates trade thereby increasing the demand for transport logistics. Transport logistics development generates spillover effect to promote trade with non… Show more

“…Linear regression tests were used to see how both independent variables, namely ship voyage time and shipping distance, affect the amount of LSS tariff (dependent variable). A study by Lai et al tested hypotheses to investigate the relationship between internal tariff rates, international trade, and transport logistics development in ASEAN countries, using a simple regression calculation [32]. According to Pandis et al, in linear regression, one can conclude more parameters to find factors that predict a result better [33].…”

“…This offsite construction model enhances opportunities for international trading within geographical regions depending on the countries' competitive advantages. The growth of international free trade offers wider business opportunities and potential for new trading connections (Lai et al 2019). The international and regional trade increases the EPC overseas trading.…”

“…As discussed above, the project freight is highly influenced by construction sector development. The port, shipping, and logistics stakeholders should reactively respond to the global trade movement by monitoring the global demand, upgrading transportation efficiency, and adapting to future uncertainties in demand and opportunities (Lai et al 2019) to compete in the project freight market.…”

“…Another large body of research focuses on the importance of logistics networks in international trade cooperation. Lai et al (2019) looked at the interaction between foreign trade and logistics networks in Association of Southeast Asian Nations, (Asean) countries and discovered that trade liberalisation and transportation growth complement each other. Çelebi (2019) looked at the impact of logistics networks on trade facilitation based on income levels.…”
