Are there Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks preserved on Sørkapp Land, Svalbard?

Abstract: Paleogene formations on eastern Sørkapp Land contain common, reworked, Middle and Late Cretaceous terrestrial and marine microfloras. This observation questions the Late Cretaceous age reported for the Firkanten Formation in the Øyrlandet Graben on western Sørkapp Land, as the pollen and spores reported from this graben may not be in situ. The present palynostratigraphic data from the eastern Sørkapp Land suggest that the Firkanten and Basilika formations were deposited in a relatively short time-period during… Show more

“…The height difference between these coals of same stratigraphic level is c. 600 m across a horizontal distance of only 9 km. [12,23,39,72,73,78,84,90,92] and this study. Stratigraphic chart after [99].…”

“…At Sylfjellet, the Paleocene Firkanten Formation rests on the Barremian-Aptian Helvetiafjellet Formation. This regional hiatus is known to increase in magnitude northward within the CTB, with the Firkanten Formation lying directly on top of the upper Albian strata of the Carolinefjellet Formation deposits in southern Spitsbergen [90], middle Albian strata in southeastern Spitsbergen [91], Aptian strata in Central Spitsbergen [39], upper Aptian in the Longyearbyen area and lower Aptian at Erdmannflya [12]. In the northernmost location of Ny-Ålesund, the Van Mijenfjorden Group rests directly on Lower Triassic and Upper Permian strata [92].…”

“…New tracks were subsequently discovered when the same locality was revisited in the early 2000s (Hurum et al 2006). Other Spitsbergen dinosaur tracks from the same formation were also reported at Hanaskogdalen and Ullaberget, in the doctoral work of Ivar Midtkandal (Midtkandal et al 2007), and at Olsokneset, described in a popular paper by Smelror et al (2006).…”

“…Smelror & Larssen (2016) argue that their observations question the Late Cretaceous age reported for the Firkanten Formation in the Øyrlandet Graben on western Sørkapp Land by Krutzsch (2001), as the pollen and spores reported from this graben may not be in situ. The palynostratigraphic data provided by Smelror & Larssen (2016) suggest that the Firkanten and Basilika formations on Sørkapp Land were deposited in a relatively short time-period during the Early to Mid Thanetian. The youngest Cretaceous deposits documented from the Carolinefjellet Formation in eastern Sørkapp Land are of Late Albian age.…”
