Resumo Os transtornos psiquiátricos possuem grande morbidade entre estudantes universitários da área da saúde. A depressão e ansiedade são os mais frequentes. O artigo se propõe a analisar os diferentes graus da depressão nos cursos da área de saúde e correlacionar esse transtorno ao gênero e à idade. O trabalho foi qualiquantitativo, desenvolvido com os acadêmicos de medicina, enfermagem e odontologia submetidos ao Inventário de Depressão de Beck (BDI). Fizeram parte da amostra 383 acadêmicos; a quantidade de alunos matriculados em medicina foi de 44 (11,62%), odontologia, 94 (24,50%) e enfermagem, 245 (63,87%). Desses, 273 (71,3%) eram mulheres e 110 (28,70%) homens com um intervalo na faixa etária de 26 a 33 anos. Identificou-se que não houve associação entre a variável depressão e gênero; a depressão grave foi constatada em 5,40% dos estudantes de odontologia, 8,60% dos de enfermagem e a depressão moderada a grave em 3,60% dos de medicina. Nota-se pelo BDI que os sintomas depressivos entre estudantes da área da saúde têm-se mostrado superior a outras populações de idade correspondente. A depressão é um fator de risco para a sociedade sendo importante a formulação de políticas de saúde mental, adotando-se medidas de apoio emocional, reestruturação da grade curricular e implementação de atividades psicológicas de autocontrole com criação de grupos de assistência psicológica ao aluno visando a prevenção de transtornos psíquicos nesses futuros profissionais da saúde.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of socioeconomic status and dimensions of mental health with suicidal tendency among students of the University of Tabriz, Iran. Methods: The present descriptive and correlational study was conducted on 900 students of the University of Tabriz in the academic year of 2016-2017. The study tools included the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSSI), Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), and Socio-Economic Status Questionnaire (SESQ) of Ghodratnama et al. Results: Correlation results showed that depression (r = 0.514, P < 0.01), psychoticism (r = 0.478, P < 0.01), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (r = 0.463, P < 0.01), respectively, had the highest correlation with suicidal ideations. Somatization was also correlated with suicidal ideations (r = 0.231, P < 0.05). Of the components of socioeconomic status, income (r = -0.401, P < 0.01), and the economic class component (r = -0.321, P < 0.05) had the highest correlation coefficients, respectively. Results of regression analysis indicated that the mental health variable predicted suicide in merely 58.6% of people. Moreover, with the addition of the socioeconomic status variable to the equation, both variables predicted an average of 71.6% of the overall suicidal ideations among individuals. Conclusion: Results indicated that mental health difficulties and socioeconomic problems might have a negative impact on the development of suicidal thoughts. Therefore, it is highly recommended that students’ mental health and social/financial problems be taken into consideration by educational managers responsible in universities, a mission that would be included in curriculum plans.

IntroductionWaterpipe smoking is gaining popularity among the youth in Poland and is evaluated for the first time in this work. The authors address the social and demographic factors that motivate young people to smoke and attempt to determine which of them contribute to habit formation.Material and methodsThe data were collected among school and university students in Poland during a global survey on various forms of tobacco use. Multivariable regression models were applied for odds-ratio evaluation. The data concern waterpipe and cigarette smoking habits.ResultsThe survey was completed by 19,097 respondents. The survey included 144 schools and 32 universities from 16 voivodeships in Poland. Respondent gender exhibited the highest ORs (95% Cl), both in the case of current and ever WP users: 2.11 (2.10–2.12) and 2.16 (2.15–2.17), respectively. The other important factor was a place of living: 1.83 (1.82–1.84) and 2.17 (2.16–2.18), respectively. All ORs were statistically significant for p = 0.05.ConclusionsThe prevalence of tobacco smoking among Polish youths is high. Waterpipe tobacco smoking was found to be the second most popular habit after cigarette smoking. Moreover, young smokers use other non-tobacco products in waterpipes, and drink alcohol during smoking sessions. Many young people try waterpipe smoking without previous experience with cigarettes.
