Are international co-publications an indicator for quality of scientific research?

Abstract: This article deals with the role of internationally co-authored papers (co-publications). Specifically, we compare, within a data-set of German research units, citation and co-publication indicators as a proxy for the unobserved quality dimension of scientific research. In that course we will also deal with the question whether both citations and co-publications are considerably related. Our results suggest that, although there is a strong partial correlation between citations and co-publications within a mult… Show more

“…As the acceptance of the scientific community is most convincingly guaranteed through the peer-review process [26], we decided to limit our study to peer-reviewed academic journal articles. As an analytical choice strategy, conference proceedings and book chapters were deliberately excluded from our examination (we do realise that this is where a vast amount of the research into resilience engineering has been published).…”

“…The emerging bibliometric network analysis often analyzes the relationships among keywords, country, research institute, and author. The common network analysis includes co-word analysis [33][34][35], co-citation analysis [36,37], co-authorship analysis [38][39][40], and co-publication analysis [41]. Many disciplines have used bibliometric methods to explore the impact of research themes, such as natural science, engineering, business, social sciences, and humanities [42][43][44][45][46].…”

“…The point of departure of this volume is the evidence of huge differences between the disciplines with respect to their input, throughput, profiles of output and the typical conditions of knowledge production Schmoch and Schubert 2008;Schmoch et al 2010). However, these differences are still little understood and are not reflected in science policy and the implementation of new governance forms in the research system.…”
