S-nitrosothiol (RSNO)-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were doped into polyurethane (PU) to achieve extended NO-releasing coatings. Parameters influencing the synthesis of RSNO-functionalized nitric oxide (NO)-releasing MSNs were evaluated to elucidate the impact of pore structure on NO-release characteristics. The porous particles were characterized as having larger NO payloads and longer NO-release durations than that of nonporous particles, a feature attributed to recombination of the NO radical in confined intraporous microenvironments. Nitric oxide-release kinetics, particle leaching, and thermal stability of the RSNO-modified MSNs dispersed in PU were evaluated as a function of PU structure to determine the feasibility of preparing a range of NO-releasing polymers for biomedical device coating applications. The NOrelease kinetics from the PUs proved to be highly extended (>30 d) and consistent over a range of polyurethane properties. Furthermore, RSNO-modified MSN leaching was not observed from the PUs. The NO-release payloads were also maintained for 4 days for polymers stored at 0 °C.

This PhD investigates a novel architecture for digital libraries. This architecture should enable search processes to return instances of result core ontologies further on called result ontologies linked to documents found within a digital library. Such result ontologies would describe a search result more comprehensively, concisely and coherently. Other applications can then access these result ontologies via the web. This outcome should be achieved by introducing a modular ontology repository and an automatic ontology learning methodology for documents stored in a digital library. Current limitations in terms of automatic extraction of ontologies should be overcome with the help of seed ontologies, deep natural language processing techniques and weights applied to newly added concepts. The modular ontology repository will be comprised of a top-level ontology layer, a core ontology layer and a document and result ontology layer.

En este trabajo se estudian algunos aspectos asociados con la síntesis, mediante procesamiento sol-gel, del aluminato de níquel. A los sólidos obtenidos se les determina la composición elemental mediante absorción atómica y fluorescencia de rayos-X, se les investiga la textura por sortometría de N 2 a 77 K, se les analiza la estructura por difracción de rayos-X y se les examina la morfología con microscopía electrónica de barrido. Los resultados muestran que la hidrólisis a 80 °C y pH 10 de tri-sec-butóxido de aluminio en presencia de nitrato de níquel conduce a un xerogel cuyo tratamiento a 900 °C resulta en un sólido azul brillante, finamente dividido, poroso y altamente compatible con la espinela NiAl 2 O 4 . La textura de estos materiales se manifiesta por isotermas adsorción-desorción de nitrógeno tipo IV y anillos de histéresis tipo E; se verifica que la temperatura de hidrólisis no ejerce una marcada influencia sobre el área superficial de los sólidos y se comprueba que los sólidos poseen una distribución monomodal de tamaños de poro.Palabras Clave: Procesamiento sol-gel, aluminato de níquel, espinelas cerámicas, soportes oxídicos. Influence of some variables of the sol-gel process in the textural and structural properties of a NiAl 2 O 4 supportIn this work some aspects related to the synthesis of nickel aluminate as a ceramic material by the sol-gel processing, are studied. The solids obtained are analyzed by atomic absorption and x ray flourescence in order to determine their chemical composition. Texture is investigated using N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, the structure is verified by x ray diffraction, and the morphology is looked using scanning electron microscope. The results show that the hydrolysis of aluminum tri-sec-butoxyde in presence of nickel nitrate at 80 °C and pH 10, produces a xerogel whose treatment at 900 °C results in a bright blue, fine, porous, spinel type solid, NiAl 2 O 4 . Texture data of these materials as shown by type IV isotherms with hysteresis loops type E; it verifies that hydrolysis temperature does not influence the surface area and confirms that these solids have a monomodal pore size distribution.Key Words: Sol-gel processing, nickel aluminate, spinels, oxide supports.
