Architectural Organization of Filiform Papillae in Normal and Black Hairy Tongue Epithelium

Abstract: Background: An inadequate understanding of the complex morphologic characteristics of human filiform papillae has hampered the histopathological characterization of disorders affecting tongue keratinization. To better define the 3-dimensional cytoarchitecture of tongue epithelium, we performed detailed immunohistochemical analyses of normal and black hairy tongue tissues using a panel of antikeratin antibodies.Observations: The dome-shaped base of the human filiform papilla (primary papilla) is surmounted by 3… Show more

“…Men demonstrated a higher prevalence than women, found in our as well as in other studies [26, 20]. The condition indicates either a defective desquamation of the cells in the central column of filiform papillae and in the formation of highly elongated cornified spines or hairs, alternatively that the rate of formation of keratinized material may be increased [31, 33]. …”

“…Detailed studies exist on rats [14,15], mice [16], porcupine [17], wild boar and pig [18], and humans [19,20]. An overview of evolution in papilla morphology among vertebrates was detailed in Iwasaki [21].…”

“…This altera on of oral fl ora predispose to trapping of foreign material and s mulate local microbial overgrowth that lead to color change with delayed desquama on of cells in central column of fi liform papillae and marked reten on of secondary papillary cells that express hair type kera ns. 9 Many capsule and tablet contain red, black, yellow ferric oxide as a colorant which accumulates as debris with overgrowth of bacteria and yeasts which lead to synthesis of porphyrin producing chromogenic organisms resul ng in BHT. 5 Our pa ent was on lansoprazole since last one year irregularly but regularly since last 2 months.…”
