Stimuli-responsive materials are of immense importance because of their ability to undergo alteration of their properties in response to their environment. The properties of such materials can be tuned by subtle adjustments in temperature, pH, light, and so forth. Among such smart materials, multi-stimuli-responsive polymeric materials are of pronounced significance as they offer a wide range of applications and their properties can be tuned through several mechanisms. Here, we aim to highlight some recent studies showcasing the multi-stimuli-responsive character of these polymers, which are still relatively little known compared to their single-stimuli-responsive counterpart.

A supramolecular block copolymer is prepared by the molecular recognition of nucleobases between poly(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate)-SS-poly(ε-caprolactone)-adenine (P(MEO MA-co-OEGMA)-SS-PCL-A) and uracil-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-U). Because the block copolymer is linked by the combination of covalent (disulfide bond) and noncovalent (AU) bonds, it not only has similar properties to conventional covalently linked block copolymers but also possesses a dynamic and tunable nature. The copolymer can self-assemble into micelles with a PCL core and P(MEO MA-co-OEGMA)/PEG shell. The size and morphologies of the micelles/aggregates can be adjusted by altering the temperature, pH, salt concentration, or adding dithiothreitol (DTT) to the solution. The controlled release of Nile red is achieved at different environmental conditions.

Chemical logic gates can be fabricated by synthesizing molecules that have the ability to detect external stimuli (e.g., temperature or pH) and provide logical outputs. It is, however, challenging to fabricate a system that consists of many logic gates using this method: complex molecules can be difficult to synthesize and these logic gates typically cannot be integrated together. Here, we fabricated different types of logic gates by assembling a combination of different types of stimuli-responsive hydrogels that change their size under the influence of one type of stimulus. Importantly, the preparation of these stimuli-responsive hydrogels is widely reported and technically simple. Through designing the geometry of the systems, we fabricated the YES, NOT, OR, AND, NOR, and NAND gates. Although the hydrogels respond to different types of stimuli, their outputs are the same: a change in size of the hydrogel. Hence, we show that the logic gates can be integrated easily (e.g., by connecting an AND gate to an OR gate). In addition, we fabricated a standalone system with the size of a normal drug tablet (i.e., a "smart tablet") that can analyze (or diagnose) different stimuli and control the release of a chemical (or drug) via the logic gates.
