Aquatic photolysis of carbamazepine by UV/H2O2 and UV/Fe(II) processes

Abstract: In this work, the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in water by UV/ H 2 O 2 and UV/Fe(II), two UV-based photolysis processes, was investigated. The addition of H 2 O 2 and Fe(II) significantly improved the CBZ decomposition rate relevant to UV treatment alone. For UV/H 2 O 2 photolysis, CBZ photodegradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The rate of CBZ degradation increased with the increase of H 2 O 2 concentrations and the decrease of initial CBZ concentrations. CBZ oxidation rates in sea water and … Show more

“…Acridone (VII) could also be formed by further oxidation of product IV through elimination of a carbonyl group [38]. Formation of acridone (VII) was also observed upon the attack of CBZ by HO • radicals formed either by UV/H 2 O 2 or UV/Fe 2+ treatment [39].…”

“…Although UV photlysis alone has been observed to be ineffective for CBZ removal (0-20%) in a number of studies [220,231], removal can be significantly improved by adding H 2 O 2 or a photocatalyst such as TiO 2 [214,220]. For instance, adding a single dose of H 2 O 2 (5-15%) to UV photolysis process resulted in an enhanced CBZ removal of 60-75% [225,226].…”

“…Combination of UV radiation and Fe(II) ions, which was also studied, gave the best results. Seven photoproducts were detected and identified: hydroxylated carbamazepine derivatives, carbamazepine epoxide, and acridine derivatives (Liu et al 2014 ). Different findings of these two studies are difficult to explain, taking into consideration similar applied conditions of photolysis.…”
