Approximate analysis of three-dimensional groundwater flow toward a radial collector well in a finite-extent unconfined aquifer

Abstract: Abstract. This study develops a three-dimensional (3-D) mathematical model for describing transient hydraulic head distributions due to pumping at a radial collector well (RCW) in a rectangular confined or unconfined aquifer bounded by two parallel streams and no-flow boundaries. The streams with low-permeability streambeds fully penetrate the aquifer. The governing equation with a point-sink term is employed. A first-order free surface equation delineating the water table decline induced by the well is consid… Show more

“…Other models of aquifers admit horizontal wells and have been developed for draining, which have been increasingly common, such as in the works of Hantush and Papadopoulos (1962), Zhan and Zlotnik (2002), Chen et al (2003), Zhan and Park (2003), Sun and Zhan (2006), Huang et al (2011), Huang et al (2012a), and Huang et al (2016).…”

“…Kacimov et al (2016) used the Strack-Chernyshov model to investigate the unconfined groundwater flows in wedge-shaped promontories with accretion along the water table and outflow from a groundwater mound into draining rays. Huang et al (2016) presented 3-D analytical solutions for hydraulic head distributions and SDRs induced by a radial collector well in a rectangular confined or unconfined aquifer bounded by two parallel streams and no-flow boundaries. Currently, the distribution of groundwater-flow velocity in a circular meniscus aquifer was investigated analytically by the theory of holomorphic functions and numerically by FEM (Kacimov et al, 2016).…”

“…With significant advances in directional drilling technology over the last 20 years, the interest in horizontal and/or slant wells has been reignited. Until now, flow to horizontal and/or slant wells has been investigated in various aspects, including flow in confined aquifers (Cleveland, 1994;Zhan, 1999;Zhan et al, 2001;Kompani-Zare et al, 2005), unconfined aquifers (Huang et al, 2011(Huang et al, , 2016Rushton and Brassington, 2013;Zhan and Zlotnik, 2002;Mohamed and Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union. 1252 X.…”
