This paper looks at the present level of computing in Afica, the diflculties of effective d i m i o n of computem and transfer of information technology (IT), and how to overnome them. It is concluded that IT will not be a panacea for Afiaa's underdevelopment, but that, with adequateplanning andprovision of the infiastructures that are required for computer dimion, it could help in enhancing standartls of living and economic growth. +an countries should not introduce IT systems indiscriminately, but should plan the areas where they will result in benefits, without much damage to domestic culture and technology.
