Approach to Formalizing UML Sequence Diagrams

Abstract: UML sequence diagrams are widely used as a behavioral modeling language for interactive systems for their concise and intuitive expression, especially a few high security systems. However, UML sequence diagrams lack precise formal description of semantics when they are used in modeling of the interactions between objects. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a solution by translating the UML sequence diagrams into a formalization system ALCQI-CTL which combines the features of the description logics and c… Show more

“…TCDFDs are visually similar to a sequence diagram of UML [Li and Ruan 2011], a well-known model from the software engineering community, which represents the flow of execution of a set of software modules. However, TCDFDs have a different semantics, as they are designed to enhance DFDs by adding the temporal constraints among the tasks that are present in the other representation models discussed in Section 3.…”

“…Störrle presented a formal specification of UML Interactions and a comparison of UML 2.0 and UML 1.4 Interactions [11] and [12]). A similar work was done by Knapp and Cengarle ([13] and [14]), Li and Ruan [15] and Shen et al [16]. Special attention was set to the semantics of assert and negative CombinedFragments ( [17] and [18]), though.…”

“…Martin [3] presented UML class diagrams which allow us to denote the static contents of and the relationships between classes. Li [4] presented UML sequence diagrams which are widely used as a behavioral modeling language for interactive systems for their concise and intuitive expression, especially for a few high security systems. Samuel [5] described Sequence diagrams which one of the most widely used UML models in the software industry.…”
