AimsTo shed light on the process of advocacy in the context of community health nursing, through a methodology inspired by the epistemologies of the South.DesignWe conducted a collaborative ethnography in a community health centre in Canada.Methodsde Sousa Santos' epistemologies of the South, a typology of advocacy and main themes from historic research informed the methodology. Data were collected between 2016 and 2018 through 420 h of fieldwork observations and three group discussions, including a collective process to co‐construct interpretations with participants. Twenty‐one nurses participated in the study.ResultsNurses had sufficient work flexibility to practice advocacy actions focused on individuals and groups. They also engaged in attempts at policy reform in the form of defending access to appropriate care and changing the mode of care organization. However, these were curbed by bureaucracy and administrative rules, resulting in the eventual dismissal of health promotion actions and experiences of moral distress.ConclusionDespite the political climate of their work environment impeding social justice agendas, nurses' advocacy practices showed a persistence of moral values and ideals in coherence with the regional nursing legacy.Implications for the Profession and/or Patient CareActing at the organizational level and involving field nurses in decision making are potential avenues for increasing policy advocacy efficacy.ImpactExamining contexts through another epistemic lens and methods of research drawing on history and anthropology has shed light on a process of advocacy. In order to reduce social inequities in health, nurses need to move from patient advocacy to policy advocacy. Literature reports many barriers when nurses try to address the structural level of policy advocacy. Very little empirical research exists to show how nurses respond to these barriers and the resulting impact on the effectiveness of policy advocacy. This study characterized the types and the process of advocacy practiced by community health nurses. A collaborative ethnography with 21 nurses showed that their policy advocacy was often dismissed, leading to negative consequences such as less policy advocacy attempts, changes in their clinical evaluation with patients and personal experiences of moral distress. We argue that structural change will only occur when collective advocacy will be supported by organizations, therefore reducing inequities that affect both community health and working conditions of nurses. Afin de réduire les iniquités sociales de santé, les infirmières doivent dépasser le plaidoyer axé sur les individus en investissant des stratégies de plaidoyer ciblant les structures et les politiques. Dans cet article, nous soutenons que de ne pas exercer de plaidoyer structurel peut amener des conséquences néfastes pour les infirmières elles-mêmes et les communautés qu’elles desservent. Cette étude caractérise les types et le processus de plaidoyer exercés par les infirmières en santé communautaire. Une ethnographie collaborative avec 21 infirmières montre que leurs tentatives de plaidoyer structurel étaient ignorées, décourageant les tentatives futures, entraînant des changements dans leur évaluation clinique et des expériences de détresse morale. Nous argumentons que le changement structurel surviendra seulement lorsque les stratégies de plaidoyer seront collectivisées et soutenues par les organisations de santé, réduisant ainsi les iniquités affectant à la fois la santé communautaire et les conditions de travail des infirmières.

Les cercles d’auteurs constituent un dispositif collaboratif d’apprentissage de l’écriture s’inscrivant dans une approche intégrée du développement des compétences à écrire, à lire et à communiquer oralement des élèves. Dans cet article, les auteurs présentent les savoirs et les savoir-faire qu’une étude de type recherche-action sur la place de l’oral dans les cercles d’auteurs au primaire a permis de faire émerger, spécifiquement en lien avec les conduites orales mobilisées au sein du cercle de planification, soit la première étape du dispositif. L’analyse des activités élaborées et réalisées par les enseignantes participantes indique qu’elles ont choisi de traiter l’une ou l’autre des quatre conduites orales suivantes : porter attention, se poser des questions, gérer les tours de parole et rebondir sur les propos. Les résultats montrent que l’implication des enseignantes dans la recherche-action s’est révélée fructueuse pour faciliter leur appropriation du dispositif et permettre le traitement des conduites orales ciblées.
