Applying the Values of Geoethics for Sustainable Speleotourism Development

Abstract: Establishing sustainable and responsible speleotourism development is a major challenge and involves complex activities. Adequate theoretical starting point is the application of geoethical values related to the conservation and protection of the caves to be used for touristic purposes. Positive and negative cases of human behaviors towards speleological geoheritage are discussed, in order to highlight what should be done in cave management to avoid malpractices and on what elements could be founded adequate s… Show more

“…The study of geocultural heritage provides moral values for society [24]. Geoethics, as an interdisciplinary endeavor, promotes these ethical values [25] in order to sensitize society about the problems associated with geoenvironment [26], make people realize their role as an active geological force [27] and re-examine their relationship with the Earth system [28]. In Geoethics as a reference scale for valuing moral adequacy [29] may be exploited the evolutionary perspective of Kohlberg's moral development [30], which includes six stages on three levels (preconventional, conventional, post-conventional).…”

“…The increasing interest in speleological geoheritage, and the consequent development of speleotourism, makes urgent the design of management plans to ensure the preservation and long-term sustainability of lava tubes from the Galapagos Islands [19]. Adding to the fact that microbiological research is crucial for the preservation of Galapagos geoheritage, studies on subsurface microbiology from lava tubes are considered of extreme relevance [12,16,18,20].…”

“…Both visitors and stakeholders must optimize the use of environmental resources, which are a key element of tourism development, thus preserving essential ecological processes and contributing to the conservation of natural resources and biodiversity [33,58,[68][69][70][71]. Moreover, there is the necessity to respect the sociocultural authenticity of the host communities, preserve their built and living cultural heritage and their traditional values, and contribute to intercultural tolerance and understanding [27,53,55,72].…”
