Applying Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle for Laboratory Education

Abstract: This paper describes a model for laboratory education based on Kolb's experiential learning theory. The method is implemented using modern teaching technologies and a combination of remote, virtual, and hands-on laboratory sessions and have been applied to the teaching of the undergraduate process control laboratory at the Chemical Engineering Department at Loughborough University, United Kingdom. An argument that poor learning in the laboratory is due to insufficient activation of the prehension dimension of … Show more

“…Learning, when viewed experientially, is more focused on the process than the products, highlighting the development of meta-cognitive skills critical to lifelong learning (Baker et al, 2012). This approach to learning has shown to increase student satisfaction in the course, improve retention of information as measured on examinations, develop a deeper, more complex understanding of concepts, improve practical use of information, and develop meta-cognitive skills useful in all domains (Abdulwahed & Nagy, 2009;Eyler & Giles, 1999;Eyler & Halteman, 1981;Markus, Howard, & King, 1993;Specht & Sandlin, 1991;Steinke & Buresh, 2002).…”

“…Constructivist pedagogy approaches perceive learning as a process of constructing knowledge by students themselves as opposed to the passive teacher-student pedagogy [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Constructivist approaches became popular in reforms of engineering education [9,10].…”

“…Many education experts emphasise the way that knowledge is socially situated, particularly the role that activity, participation and experience play in learning (Abdulwahed and Nagy, 2009;Goedert et al, 2011;Pasin and Giroux, 2011;White, 2010). Experiential learning occurs when 'knowledge is created through the transformation of experience' (Kolb, 1984).…”
