Applications of State Employment Data to Transportation Planning

Abstract: A major problem in transportation modeling is the acquisition of quality employment data. Employment data are used in transportation planning to model the journey to work and other types of trips, but they rarely are collected solely for transportation purposes because of the large expense involved. Census data, on the other hand, are inexpensive but are collected only every 10 years (although the American Community Survey provides some continuous data). This presentation outlines and assesses a process to dev… Show more

“…One is similar to vehicle trip-based models and involves first conducting commodity flow surveys or purchasing existing commodity flow data from third parties. These data are used to fit commodity-specific production and consumption models using linear regression or an input-output model (21,22). The second, more popular approach employs a top-down approach that begins with aggregated commodity flow data that are available at a broader geographic scale (2,23).…”

“…The Oregon Employment Department database (ES202) provided the sampling frame. Numerous states have used ES202 data for transportation research and planning practice (20). All six deployments used similar sampling frames to reduce the potential for different response rates because of differences in the firms rather than in the deployment strategies.…”

“…Research on travel behavior in transportation planning and local economic development increasingly relies on employment data that are disaggregate and site-specific ( 1 ). This study discusses an expanded data verification method to structure and automate review of new information about business establishments in relation to a database of previously verified employers.…”
