Applications of Rhetorical Structure Theory

Abstract: A B S T R A C T Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) is a theory of text organization that has led to areas of application beyond discourse analysis and text generation, its original goals. In this article, we review the most important applications in several areas: discourse analysis, theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, and computational linguistics. We also provide a list of resources useful for work within the RST framework. The present article is a complement to our review of the theoretical aspects o… Show more

“…This theory guided the annotation of the RST Discourse Treebank (RST-DT) for English, from which several textlevel discourse parsers have been induced (Hernault et al, 2010;Joty et al, 2012;Feng and Hirst, 2014;Li et al, 2014;Ji and Eisenstein, 2014). Such parsers have proven to be useful for various downstream applications (Daumé III and Marcu, 2009;Burstein et al, 2003;Higgins et al, 2004;Thione et al, 2004;Sporleder and Lapata, 2005;Taboada and Mann, 2006;Louis et al, 2010;Bhatia et al, 2015).…”

“…It is central to a number of high-impact applications, such as text summarization (Louis et al, 2010), sentiment analysis (Voll and Taboada, 2007;Somasundaran et al, 2009), question answering (Ferrucci et al, 2010), and automatic evaluation of student writing (Miltsakaki and Kukich, 2004;Burstein et al, 2013). Hierarchical discourse representations such as Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) are particularly useful because of the computational applicability of tree-shaped discourse structures (Taboada and Mann, 2006), as shown in Figure 1.…”
