Applications of carbon nanotubes and polymeric micro‐/nanoparticles in fish vaccine delivery: progress and future perspectives

Abstract: Newly evolving strains of pathogenic microorganisms in aquaculture are posing formidable challenge in controlling and/or eradication of diseases affecting aquaculture. Many research studies have aimed to address this challenge, and the delivery of vaccines using biocompatible nano-delivery systems is widely investigated. Nanoparticles (NPs) have tremendous potential for application as delivery vehicles of novel vaccines. At present, various polymeric and non-polymeric NPs are utilized to deliver vaccines in aq… Show more

“…For this purpose, the CNTs require functionalization with biologically targeted molecules (sugar, glycolipid, protein, RNA, and DNA). [95] Functionalized CNTs were also considered for vaccine delivery in aquatic [97] and mammal vaccinology. [98] Antibodyproducing B cells in mice were induced when MWCNTs were functionalized with a tetravalent vaccine to prevent the Dengue virus.…”

“…214,215 Although nanoparticles have tremendous potential for application as delivery vehicles of novel vaccines, in-depth studies on antigen release, cellular uptake and intracellular fate of nanovaccines are required. 216 Most of the vaccination studies considered the production of antibodies and the RPS as the gold standard for determining vaccine efficiency, as they found a correlation between RPS and antibody titers. 166 However, besides innate and antibody-mediated immunity, adaptive cellular immunity is also elicited by a vaccine, and its role in vaccine efficacy should not be undervalued.…”

“…Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) belong to another important class of inorganic NPs. Their unique properties, such as inertness, biodegradability, non-immunogenicity, and nontoxicity, have enabled CNTs to be developed as safe vaccine scaffolds [159]. CNTs can be divided into two categories depending on their number of layers: single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) and multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs).…”

“…CNTs can be divided into two categories depending on their number of layers: single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) and multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs). SWCNTs comprise a single graphene cylinder, while MWCNTs comprise multiple coaxial cylinders [159]. Recently, SWCNTs have been extensively studied as carriers to harbor subunit components for the development of fish vaccines [160][161][162][163][164].…”
