The massive growth of mobile users will spread to significant numbers of small cells for the Fifth Generation (5G) mobile network, which will overlap the fourth generation (4G) network. A tremendous increase in handover (HO) scenarios and HO rates will occur. Ensuring stable and reliable connection through the mobility of user equipment (UE) will become a major problem in future mobile networks. This problem will be magnified with the use of suboptimal handover control parameter (HCP) settings, which can be configured manually or automatically. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the impact of different HCP settings on the performance of 5G network. Several system scenarios are proposed and investigated based on different HCP settings and mobile speed scenarios. The different mobile speeds are expected to demonstrate the influence of many proposed system scenarios on 5G network execution. We conducted simulations utilizing MATLAB software and its related tools. Evaluation comparisons were performed in terms of handover probability (HOP), ping-pong handover probability (PPHP) and outage probability (OP). The 5G network framework has been employed to evaluate the proposed system scenarios used. The simulation results reveal that there is a trade-off in the results obtained from various systems. The use of lower HCP settings provides noticeable enhancements compared to higher HCP settings in terms of OP. Simultaneously, the use of lower HCP settings provides noticeable drawbacks compared to higher HCP settings in terms of high PPHP for all scenarios of mobile speed. The simulation results show that medium HCP settings may be the acceptable solution if one of these systems is applied. This study emphasises the application of automatic self-optimisation (ASO) functions as the best solution that considers user experience.

A Semantic and Knowledge-Based Approach for Handover Management

Handover Management (HM) is pivotal for providing service continuity, enormous reliability and extreme-low latency, and meeting sky-high data rates, in wireless communications. Current HM approaches based on a single criterion may lead to unnecessary and frequent handovers due to a partial network view that is constrained to information about link quality. In turn, HM approaches based on multicriteria may present a failure of handovers and wrong network selection, decreasing the throughput and increasing the packet loss in the network. This paper proposes SIM-Know, an approach for improving HM. SIM-Know improves HM by including a Semantic Information Model (SIM) that enables context-aware and multicriteria handover decisions. SIM-Know also introduces a SIM-based distributed Knowledge Base Profile (KBP) that provides local and global intelligence to make contextual and proactive handover decisions. We evaluated SIM-Know in an emulated wireless network. When the end-user device moves at low and moderate speeds, the results show that our approach outperforms the Signal Strong First (SSF, single criterion approach) and behaves similarly to the Analytic Hierarchy Process combined with the Technique for Order Preferences by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (AHP-TOPSIS, multicriteria approach) regarding the number of handovers and the number of throughput drops. SSF outperforms SIM-Know and AHP-TOPSIS regarding the handover latency metric because SSF runs a straightforward process for making handover decisions. At high speeds, SIM-Know outperforms SSF and AHP-TOPSIS regarding the number of handovers and the number of throughput drops and, further, improves the throughput, delay, jitter, and packet loss in the network. Considering the obtained results, we conclude that SIM-Know is a practical and attractive solution for cognitive HM.

Τα ετερογενή δίκτυα συνδυάζουν πολλαπλές ραδιο-τεχνολογίες (radio access technologies – RATs) στο ασύρματο δίκτυο πρόσβασης. Ένα σημαντικό πρόβλημα που πηγάζει από αυτήν τη συνύπαρξη είναι η επιλογή του πιο κατάλληλου RAT για την εξυπηρέτηση κάθε υπάρχουσας ή νέας συνόδου (session). Για την αντιμετώπιση αυτού του προβλήματος έχουν προταθεί διάφορες μέθοδοι επιλογής, όπως η χρήση μαθηματικών συναρτήσεων, ασαφούς λογικής (fuzzy logic) ή/και νευρωνικών δικτύων, αλλά και σχήματα βασισμένα σε πολιτικές δικτύου. Αυτή η διατριβή περιγράφει ένα νέο μηχανισμό για τη λήψη τέτοιων αποφάσεων. Ο μηχανισμός αυτός ονομάζεται UDS. Τα αρχικά αυτά περιγράφουν τις τρεις θεμελιώδεις επιλογές που έγιναν για τη σχεδίασή του: ο μηχανισμός είναι επικεντρωμένος στο χρήστη (user ‑ U), είναι κατανεμημένος (distributed ‑ D) μεταξύ του τερματικού και του δικτύου κορμού, και τέλος επεξεργάζεται την κάθε σύνοδο (session ‑ S) χωριστά. Η πρώτη σχεδιαστική επιλογή στοχεύει στην ανάμειξη του χρήστη στην τελική απόφαση. Η δεύτερη εισάγει μια αρχική επεξεργασία στο τερματικό (UE), έτσι ώστε να μειωθεί η ανταλλαγή μηνυμάτων στο ασύρματο κομμάτι του δικτύου πρόσβασης. Η τρίτη στοχεύει στην πιο αποδοτική χρήση των πόρων του δικτύου.Το βασικό κίνητρο για τη δημιουργία αυτού του μηχανισμού ήταν να προταθεί ένας μηχανισμός επιλογής RAT που θα έχει στο κέντρο τις προτιμήσεις του χρήστη, αλλά ταυτόχρονα δε θα παραβιάζει ποτέ τις πολιτικές του διαχειριστή του δικτύου. Η δημιουργία μιας τέτοιας λύσης δεν είναι εύκολη, καθώς οι δύο αυτοί στόχοι είναι συνήθως αντικρουόμενοι. Επιπλέον, πρέπει o προτεινόμενος μηχανισμός να είναι υλοποιήσιμος, επεκτάσιμος και να μην έχει προβλήματα κλίμακας. Το αποτέλεσμα αυτής της προσπάθειας είναι μία οικογένεια τριών λύσεων, υπό το κοινό όνομα UDS. Κάθε μία λύση προέκυψε ως η εξέλιξη της προηγούμενης.Η πρώτη από αυτές τις λύσεις, ο απλός UDS μηχανισμός (s‑UDS, simple UDS), περιλαμβάνει έναν αλγόριθμο που εκτελείται στο UE και έναν ακόμα στο κυρίως δίκτυο. Ο πρώτος αλγόριθμος επεξεργάζεται όλους τους δυνατούς συνδυασμούς συνόδων και RATs που εμπλέκονται, και έχει ως αποτέλεσμα μια λίστα προτεραιοτήτων για τα RATs που μπορούν να εξυπηρετήσουν κάθε σύνοδο, ανάλογα με τις προτιμήσεις του χρήστη. Μετά, αυτή η λίστα αποστέλλεται στο κυρίως δίκτυο, όπου ενεργοποιείται ο δεύτερος αλγόριθμος που εκτελείται εκεί. Αυτός ο αλγόριθμος θα πάρει και την τελική απόφαση επιλογής, συνδυάζοντας τη λίστα επιλογών κατά σειρά προτίμησης του χρήστη και τις πολιτικές του διαχειριστή του δικτύου. Η δυνατότητα υλοποίησης του μηχανισμού επιδεικνύεται με την περιγραφή και την προσομοίωση σε SDL, καθώς και μέσω της υλοποίησης μιας πλατφόρμας δοκιμών (test-bed). Η αξιολόγηση της απόδοσης του προτεινόμενου μηχανισμού μέσω προσομοίωσης και η σύγκρισή του με έναν απλό μηχανισμό εξισορρόπησης φόρτου (load balancing), έδειξε ότι ο s‑UDS μεγιστοποιεί την ικανοποίηση των προτιμήσεων του χρήστη, ενώ ταυτόχρονα ελαχιστοποιεί την ανταλλαγή μηνυμάτων πάνω στο ασύρματο κομμάτι του δικτύου. Το τίμημα για τις δύο αυτές βελτιώσεις είναι η σημαντική αύξηση στις πιθανότητες απόρριψης και τερματισμού μιας συνόδου, σε σύγκριση πάντα με τον μηχανισμό εξισορρόπησης φόρτου.Το τελευταίο μειονέκτημα έφερε την ιδέα της επόμενης λύσης, του υβριδικού UDS μηχανισμού (h‑UDS, hybrid UDS). Αυτός συνδυάζει τα δυνατά σημεία του s‑UDS, και προσπαθεί να μειώσει το κόστος της αύξησης της πιθανότητας απόρριψης/τερματισμού συνόδου. Το πετυχαίνει με τη χρήση ενός κατωφλίου, το οποίο προσδιορίζει το ποσοστό των διαθέσιμων πόρων του δικτύου κάτω από το οποίο θα ενεργοποιείται ένας υβριδικός μηχανισμός εξισορρόπησης φόρτου. Αυτός ο τελευταίος επιλέγει το λιγότερο φορτωμένο RAT, από τα διαθέσιμα στη λίστα προτεραιοτήτων του χρήστη, και όχι από όλα τα διαθέσιμα. Έτσι εξασφαλίζεται ότι η τελική επιλογή θα είναι μέσα στις προτιμήσεις του χρήστη, ακόμα και αν δεν είναι η πρώτη. Επίσης πετυχαίνεται η αποφόρτιση των επιβαρυμένων RAT, κρατώντας παράλληλα τα δυνατά σημεία του s‑UDS. Όμως και ο h‑UDS έχει ένα σημαντικό μειονέκτημα: το κατώφλι που επιλέγεται είναι στατικό, και εξαρτάται από τις διάφορες παραμέτρους του δικτύου. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι μια βέλτιστη τιμή για αυτό δεν είναι γνωστή εκ των προτέρων καθώς επίσης και ότι μια τέτοια τιμή θα άλλαζε για δύο διαφορετικά δίκτυα.Αυτό το τελευταίο μειονέκτημα ήταν το έναυσμα για την ανάπτυξη της επόμενης λύσης, του προσαρμοστικού UDS (a‑UDS, adaptive UDS). Σε αυτήν την περίπτωση, η τιμή του κατωφλίου δεν απαιτείται να είναι γνωστή εκ των προτέρων, μιας και αυτή θα αλλάζει, προσαρμοζόμενη στις συνθήκες που επικρατούν κάθε φορά στο δίκτυο. Ο a‑UDS έχει όλα τα πλεονεκτήματα των άλλων δύο λύσεων: μεγιστοποίηση της ικανοποίησης των προτιμήσεων του χρήστη και ελαχιστοποίηση της ανταλλαγής μηνυμάτων πάνω στην ραδιο-επαφή. Ταυτόχρονα όμως, λόγω της προσαρμογής της τιμής του κατωφλίου, καταφέρνει να διατηρήσει χαμηλά τις τιμές απόρριψης/τερματισμού μας συνόδου, πολύ κοντά στις αντίστοιχες τιμές του load balancing μηχανισμού. Έτσι λοιπόν, ο a‑UDS μηχανισμός είναι η τελική πρόταση αυτής της διατριβής για την επίλυση του προβλήματος της επιλογής δικτύου πρόσβασης με την ουσιαστική εμπλοκή του χρήστη σε αυτή. Ο μηχανισμός αυτός δίνει επίσης τη δυνατότητα στο διαχειριστή του δικτύου να ρυθμίσει τη συμπεριφορά του δικτύου σύμφωνα με τις πολιτικές διαχείρισης που έχει επιλέξει, χωρίς ποτέ όμως να παραβιάζει τις προτιμήσεις του τελικού χρήστη. Αυτό το συμπέρασμα ενισχύεται και από τα αποτελέσματα των προσομοιώσεων που πραγματοποιήθηκαν.
