Application of Zn/Al layered double hydroxides for the removal of nano-scale plastic debris from aqueous systems

Abstract: Nano-scale plastic debris (NPDs) are emerging as potential contaminants as they can be easily ingested by aquatic organisms and carry many pollutants in the environment. This study is aimed to remove NPDs from aqueous environment for the first time by using eco-friendly adsorption techniques. Initially, the interaction between NPDs and synthesized Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) was confirmed by pH titration of Zn-Al LDH against NPDs at varying mass ratio (50:1 to 50:7) and FTIR analysis for both before a… Show more

“…This stage can be attributed to the homogenized heat transfer process of the zinc-containing residues that absorbs microwaves and converts microwaves into heat energy. (2) The second stage at 300-500 • C, there is also a tendency to increase first and then decrease. This change indicated the phase structure may change during the microwave heating process.…”

“…Zinc (Zn) endows superior calenderability, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance; thereby it is widely applied in the fields like non-ferrous metallurgy, batteries, automobiles, and building materials [1][2][3]. Sphalerite (ZnS) is the main mineral used in industrial preparation of zinc, via an oxidization roasting approach.…”

“…To enhance the adsorbing efficiency of NPs, Darbha et al designed a type of double-layered Zn-Al hydroxide (Zn-Al LDH) to adsorb PS particles with diameters smaller than 1 μm from aqueous solution. [91] The surface properties of MPs existing in the natural environment are dramatically altered to be more negatively charged due to oxidation. Thus to mimic this effect, PS NPs were pretreated by coating with anionic surfactant.…”

“…Adsorbents derived from hydrotalcites can be used for the removal of acute toxic drug diclofenac in wastewater [60], while the usual treatment processes are not able to totally eliminate this compound. Moreover, Zn/Al layered double hydroxides can be used for the removal of nanoscale plastic debris from aqueous systems [61].…”
