Application of x-ray computed tomography in the evaluation of soil porosity in soil management systems

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The study aimed to evaluate a methodology to quantify the porosity of the soil using computed tomography in areas under no-tillage, conventional tillage and native forest. Three soil management systems were selected for the study: forest, conventional tillage and no-tillage. In each soil management system, undisturbed soil samples were collected in the surface layer (0.0 to 0.10 m). The tomographic images were obtained using a X-ray microtomography. After obtaining the images, they were processed, and… Show more

“…Previous studies on evaluating the influence of tillage systems at the µm scale in 3D in tropical soils are still scarce. In Brazil, one of the largest food and agricultural producers of the world, previous studies have characterized the soil porous system at µm to measure the porosity and pore size distribution of Brazilian Oxisols (Vaz et al, 2011), assessed the effect of tillage systems on the percentage of macropores (Beraldo et al, 2014) and explored the spatial and morphological configuration of the pore space of Oxisols under CT (Carducci et al, 2017(Carducci et al, , 2014. Other studies have determined the influence of ZT on the pore size and shape distribution of macropores (Passoni et al, 2015), tested the capacity of soil recovering under different management strategies (Marchini et al, 2015) and measured the impact of ZT and CT on the pore size and shape distribution and water retention (Pires et al, 2017).…”

“…Passoni et al (2014) characterized the soil macroporosity of a Rhodic Ferralsol using a second-generation X-ray microtomograph. In addition, Beraldo et al (2014) used microtomography to quantify the porosity in areas with no tillage practices, conventional tillage practices and native forest. Recently, Marchini et al (2015) applied CT to study recovering Brazilian Oxisols from the soil at 8.6 m deep, which has been exposed since the sixties, under different types of management strategies.…”

“…This range of resolution is sufficient to detect macropores, mesopores and some micropores (Table 3). Clearly, this spatial resolution is ideal for studying macropores, as verified by the evaluation of porosity under three systems of management by Beraldo et al (2014). This procedure highlights that, in this case, a comparison of the effective porosity percentages obtained with two different methods of analysis for each of the different management systems is possible on a micrometric scale.…”

“…Vaz et al (2011) quantified the porosity and the pore size distribution of two Brazilian Oxisols, resulting in important information for establishing appropriate scanning parameters for these soils. Beraldo et al (2014) also applied a tomographic method to evaluate the porosity of three soil management systems and verified that their method could be used to obtain information at the macropore scale.…”
