The Internet of Things (IoT) has garnered significant attention from people with growing changes in human life over the last few years. IoT is a network of a group of smart devices that use sensors to collect information and conduct events in their environments. The information can then be shared on the Internet. IoT uses a range of technologies and finds various applications such as smart homes, environmental monitoring, and healthcare. In this paper, we conducted a comparative study to analyze the difference between two technologies-Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). It is pertinent to note that these technologies would not be effective without incorporating security aspects due to a potential number of threats and attacks on the network. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the recent approaches to securing RFID and WSNs. We have carefully chosen most of these studies to investigate only the recent technique from 2017 to 2020. The paper also highlights common attacks on RFID and WSNs and the secure authentication mechanisms on these technologies. It further provides a different way of detecting varying attacks in RFID and WSNs.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNS) have become an indispensable tool in this epoch of technological advancements, particularly for progress made in the Internet of things. Wireless sensor nodes are deployed to collect and transmit vital data from the environment to a base station for analysis. Nevertheless, the limited battery power of the sensor nodes is rapidly drained when they stay awake for an extended period. Research has shown that significant sources of energy dissipation of sensor nodes are idle listening, packet collision, control overhead, and overhearing. One optimal solution is employing a low duty cycle mac protocol, particularly the sensor mac (SMAC) protocol. It is essential to have a detailed knowledge of the challenges identified in SMAC and solutions suggested to mitigate these challenges and the future directions. In this paper, we review techniques in SMAC protocols implemented in WSNS. In particular, we provide highlights of recent developments in the schemes used in SMAC for mitigating the challenges in SMAC and present research gaps in SMAC protocol. Finally, we discuss open issues that need to be addressed to advance the design and implementation of SMAC in WSN applications.

The increase in research in the area of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has brought a whole new meaning to medical devices. This is mainly due to advances in microcontroller technologies. WSN are cited as one of the major technologies of this century and hence, their importance in areas such as health, psychology, fire prevention, security and even the military. The great advantage of this technology is the ability to track, monitor, study, understand and act on any particular phenomenon or event. The primary purpose of a wireless health system is transferring reliable data with minimum delay. This review provides a survey of the vast research done on Wireless Biomedical Sensor Networks (WBSN), including experimental and non-experimental investigations and examples from the theoretical and empirical literature. The review incorporates a wide range of purposes: definition of concepts, review of theories, failures and less positive aspects, all seeking to generate a consistent and understandable overview of WBSN. Such systems are already being marketed, while others are still under investigation. It is also the aim of this review to identify the characteristics of WSN applied to healthcare.
