Application of Vegetation Condition Index and Standardized Vegetation Index for Assessment of Spring Drought in South Korea

Abstract: To effectively deal with the spring drought facing the South Korea periodically since 2000, a monitoring system to keep tracing the drought is critical, along with the index indicating the severity of the drought in quantified value. And to conduct the in-depth evaluation of the behavior and intensity of the drought by region, a spatial analysis by area unit is needed. Satellite imagery is effective tools that provide spatial information regularly in timely manner and the vegetation index developed using band … Show more

“…Use of the monthly VCI is more appropriate in areas with a large land management signal (e.g., cropping) and hence is suitable for monitoring agricultural drought [ McVicar and Jupp , ]. A standardized form of NDVI, known as the Standardized Vegetation Index (SVI), is based on the z score of NDVI values [ Peters et al , ; Park et al , ]: SVI=(NDVIijkfalseNDVI¯ij)/σij. The SVI is computed for each pixel (i), week (j), and year (k).…”

“…These drought events had a critical impact on South Korea, which led to regional water shortages and influenced the use of water, including for agricultural and household activities [44]. In addition, natural ecosystems were damaged by the drought, and vegetation indices on the national scale were low [33,35,45]. However, in model results, the growth peaks were observed after 2000.…”

“…NDVI of between -1 to +1 would be obtained from the calculation. In the area covered by plants, the reflective value in NIR wavelength would be higher than that in Red wavelength, thus making the NDVI value to be positive, whereas the soil surface, the open area, and the construction area would have similar reflective value between these two wavelengths thus making NDVI value to approach near zero (Park et al, 2008;Rotjanakusol & Laosuwan, 2019). In the case of water surface, the reflective value in NIR wavelength would be lower than Red wavelength thus making NDVI value to be negative (Thavorntam et al, 2015).…”
