Establishment of prevalence of malaria-associated renal impairment in Nigeria is important for proper prognosis and management of malaria and its associated complications. Using biuret method for protein estimation, alkaline picrate-slot method for creatinine and urea estimation, and flame photometry and titrimetric method for electrolytes estimation, selected kidney function parameters which included proteinuria, serum levels of urea, creatinine and electrolytes were determined in 169 malaria patients and in 58 individuals without malaria. Data obtained were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance to compare variation among malaria patients and individuals without malaria, Duncan multiple range test to compare variation among means, and correlation matrix to evaluate correlation between the parameters measured. Proteinuria in malaria cases differed significantly (p< 0.05) from individuals without malaria, and a positive correlation existed between proteinuria and parasitaemia. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the creatinine levels of malaria patients and those without malaria. It is concluded that there is a form of renal impairment associated with malaria infection in Minna irrespective of age and sex.

The rotational diffusion of pyrene-butyric-labelled human serum albumin and dansyllabelled bovine fetuin, B-lactoglobulin, ci-lactalbumin and pancreas ribonuclease has been studied by fluorescence polarization in concentrated dextran solutions (up to 0.4 g/ml). The relaxation times of the proteins increased only moderately even a t very high polysaccharide concentrations. The results confirmed the conclusions drawn from studies on dansyl-labelled serum albumin that the friction exerted by the polysaccharide on the rotation of a protein is low. The very strong inhibition of translational diffusion in polymer media can therefore be ascribed to steric hindrance.The effect of dextran on the rotational diffusion of different proteins varied and the reason for this is discussed. The measurements indicate that conformational changes may occur in some proteins a t high polymer concentrations.I n our recent studies on the rotational diffusion of serum albumin in concentrated polymer solutions [1,2], it was found that the rotation was only moderately affected by the polymers in contrast to its translational movements in similar systems [3-61. Our conclusion was that the albumin molecules must be situated in holes in which they can rotate relatively unhindered but from which they can move only with difficulty. The friction exerted by the polymer network was thus low but the steric hindrance for translational movements was high. I n an interesting treatment by Ogston et al. [6] it was shown that experimental data on the retardation of the translational movements of particles in polymer solutions [3 -61 can be quantitatively described to be a function of the probability that a free space will occur in the neighbourhood of a particle into which it can move. These authors' description of translational diffusion thus agrees with the view reached from our studies on rotational diffusion.Our experiments on rotational diffusion measured by fluorescence polarization have so far only been carried out with dansyl-labelled serum albumin. These experiments have now been extended and several dansyl-substituted proteins of varying sizes have been used as well as serum albumin labelled with a different fluorescent group.
