Application of the Method of Triads to Evaluate the Performance of Food Frequency Questionnaires and Biomarkers as Indicators of Long-term Dietary Intake

Abstract: Little is documented about the performance of the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in US minority groups and in populations in developing countries. The authors applied a novel technique, the method of triads, to assess the validity and reproducibility of the FFQ among Hispanics. The subjects were men (n = 78) and women (n = 42) living in Costa Rica. Seven 24-hour dietary recalls and two FFQ interviews (12 months apart) were conducted between 1995 and 1998 to estimate dietary intake during the past year. Pla… Show more

“…Interview-based methods such as the diet history questionnaire (DHQ) and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) are likely candidates. The latter has been applied in several studies of diet and health and recently in Costa Rica 12 . However, use of the FFQ has been questioned by some researchers due to insufficient precision [13][14][15] .…”

“…It is common to set estimated VCs and confidence limits 41.00 to 1.00 Ocke & Kaaks, 1997;Daures et al, 2000;Kabagambe et al, 2001). VC values 41 indicates a strong relationship only if it is the result of random sampling errors.…”
