Application of the Mayo Periprosthetic Joint Infection Risk Score for Total Ankle Arthroplasty

Abstract: Background: Assessing patient’s risk of infection is fundamental for prevention of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). The Mayo Prosthetic Joint Infection Risk Score (Mayo Score) is based on data from total hip and knee arthroplasty and has not been validated for application for TAA. Methods: A total of 405 consecutive TAA cases were followed for 6 months for PJI. Individual patients’ Mayo Scores were calculated and analyzed with logistic regression and receiver operating… Show more

“…In a Level II diagnostic study, Zhang et al 46 followed a total of 405 consecutive TAA cases for 6 months for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). The Mayo Prosthetic Joint Infection Risk Score (Mayo Score) was calculated for each patient and analyzed for predictability for PJI.…”

“…Zhang et al tested the Mayo Periprosthetic Joint Infection Risk Score for validation in the total ankle arthroplasty population. The authors reported that when a Mayo score of >5 was used as the criterion for high risk for PJI, the sensitivity of the test was 90% and the specificity was 84.3% 66 .…”

“…This retrospective study from Baltimore (Maryland, USA) investigated the application of the Mayo Score in a series of TAA cases and its predictability of PJI risk. 7 It included 405 consecutive TAA cases performed by one surgeon over a ten-year period (2012 to 2022), using a Trabecular Metal Total Ankle System. In this cohort, PJI was diagnosed when a positive bacterial culture was identified on joint aspiration.…”
