Application of STATCOM-HTS to improve DFIG performance and FRT during IGBT short circuit

Abstract: A little attention has been paid to the faults within the converter switches of a wind energy conversion system (WECS). Solutions suggested in the literature to improve the performance of a WECS rely on compensating the reactive power at the point of common coupling (PCC) to maintain the PCC voltage within the limits specified by the grid codes. Recently, transmission line operators have expanded WECS codes to include active power support to the grid during fault conditions. Therefore, to maintain the connecti… Show more

“…Yehia (2014) studied the application of supercapacitor energy storage device to enhance fault ride-through capability and mitigate power fluctuations of DFIG WT. Abdou et al (2014) used a STATCOM equipped with a high-temperature superconducting coil to compensate for insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switches short-circuit fault of the grid side converter of a DFIG WT. Saleh et al (2014) utilised a unified power quality controller to enhance LVRT capability of DFIG WT.…”

“…Several flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) with different control approaches have been proposed to improve the overall performance of WECS [18]. The applications of FACTS devices such as static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) [19], [20], static voltage compensator (SVC) [21] and unified power flow controller (UPFC) [22], [23] in WECS have been introduced in the literatures. For instance, a STATCOM with prominent control algorithm using proportion-integral (PI) and fuzzy logic controllers is introduced in [17].…”
