Application of solid state transformers in utility scale solar power plants

Abstract: With the increasing participation of PV sources in the international energy market, more efficient inverter topologies and modules connections are desired. Large-scale PV plants (solar farms) use generally the central inverter topology, in which the PV modules are distributed into few maximum power point trackers. Although this topology has typically high efficiency, it has low MPP tracking performance. This paper proposes a modular converter based on solid state transformers (SST), in which high frequency tra… Show more

“…For this purpose, a Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converter for the dc-dc stage of an SST was considered, according to the authors of [101], as the main key for integrating PV panels with the power grid. In [102], a modular converter based on an SST for PV power plants was detailed. In [103], an energy router based on a three-stage SST with a dual active bridge topology was proposed for designing power supply systems for non-railway consumers of the railroads, ensuring reliable integration of distributed generation plants operating with the use of RES.…”

“…Solid state transformer (SST) is an emerging technology that could influence the developments in many areas such as smart-grids, traction systems, the system with renewable energy sources (RESs) to mention just a few [1]- [3]. Some advantages of SST when compared with low-frequency transformer (LFT) include reactive power compensation, voltage regulation, power flow control, voltage sag compensation, bi-directional power flow, fault current limiting, harmonic block, and galvanic isolation [4]- [6].…”

“…The analysis of scientific publications shows that in the given power range, the most traditional solu tions are the use of lowpower string inverters (Fig. 1, a) [2,3] or powerful grid tie inverter [2,4,5] (Fig. 1, b) to connect ar rays of photovoltaic modules to the industrial network.…”
