Application of Red Mud in Wastewater Treatment

Abstract: Red mud (RM) is an industrial waste produced in large amounts during alumina extraction from bauxite. Its disposal generates serious environmental pollution due to high alkalinity. Therefore, a strategy for the effective utilization of RM must be developed. For instance, RM may be transformed into useful products, such as adsorbents. Given its high concentrations of aluminum oxides, iron oxides, titanium oxides, silica oxides, and hydroxides, RM may be developed as a cheap adsorbent for the removal of various … Show more

“…China's alumina output has been growing rapidly in the past two decades, and the output of alumina in 2019 has reached about The rapid increase in alumina production followed with the fast-growing production of its byproduct, red mud (RM). RM, also named bauxite residue, is the major waste produced during the alumina production process [4]. Depending on the quality of the bauxite and its processing [5], about 15-40% of processed bauxite ore enters the waste in the form of alkaline slurry [6].…”

“…After mixing with cementitious materials and water at a certain ratio and at a high speed, RMCB is produced and transported via piping through a drill boring and an underground laneway into a mining goaf [52]. As a strongly alkaline solid waste, in BRM, there are large amounts of free alkalis, chemical binding alkali, fluoride, and heavy metal ions, which are difficult to remove and easily pollute the surface environment as a result of open storage [53]. However, with RMCB, the surface pollution caused by BRM will not be transferred underground; the main reasons follow:…”

“…Over the past few years, red mud (RM), a solid waste generated during the production of the alumina industry, has received several attentions due to its huge pile and resource utilization difficulties 8 11 . Red mud is strongly alkaline, has large porosity and high dispersibility, which make it have a good adsorption effect on metal cations 12 .…”
