Application of Quaternary Ammonium Compounds as Compatibilizers for Polymer Blends and Polymer Composites—A Concise Review

Abstract: A wide variety of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) have escalated the attraction of researchers to explore the application of QACs. The compounds have frequently been synthesized through alkylation or quaternization of tertiary amines with alkyl halides. Recently, QACs have been applied to compatibilize polymer blends and polymer composites in improving their thermo-mechanical properties. This concise review concentrates on the application of two types of QACs as compatibilizers for polymer blends and poly… Show more

“…Currently, intense research is being conducted on the compatibilization of immiscible or incompatible polymer blends using various materials for developing cost-effective and high-performance materials. Different types of compatibilizers are able to blend various polymers. Shamsuri et al reviewed the compatibilization of different polymer composites using quaternary ammonium salts as compatibilizers. These compounds have distinct chemical structures, which allow them to interact with composite components and polymer blends.…”

“…Ionic liquids are also regarded as an environmentally benign solvent because they can be recycled [3]. Moreover, ionic liquids have interesting solvent properties, for instance, good solubility with countless organic solvents, high thermal stability, good electrical conductivity, high polarity, and non-flammability [4]. They also possess the aptitude to dissolve most organic materials, including biopolymers and some inorganic materials.…”

“…These ions can interact with organic or inorganic fillers and biodegradable polymers. The existence of intermolecular interactions can have an alteration effect on biodegradable polymer composites, and consequently improve the interfacial link between the filler and the polymer matrix [ 42 ]. As far as the authors know, no brief review has ever been made concentrating on the influence of ionic liquids on the mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties of biodegradable polymer composites.…”
