Application of Power Electronic Converter for Actual Topologies AC Traction Substation

Abstract: This paper describes the typical field of power electronic converter in the branch of traction substation. The main attention is paid to problematic of ACtraction substation. This topic is solved here due to the just started conversion from DC-traction system to ACtraction system in Czech Republic. These new ACtraction substations use semiconductor power converters for purpose to minimize un-symmetrical unbalance of input current consumption, to compensate reactive power, to filtrate high-order harmonics etc. … Show more

“…It is also depicted, that the voltage amplitude is being kept in specific range at all nodes, while the voltage angle can be varied in relatively wide range. The active and reactive power fed from node SFC to node LOC (PSFC, QSFC) is related to VLOC, VSFC and impedance between nodes SFC and LOC (ZSFC) according to (1) and (2), which has been derived in [1] for threephase transmission. Catenary shunt parameters are omitted.…”

“…In the Czech Republic, the AC railway traction systems (RTS) 25 kV 50 Hz are connected to the distribution system (DS), typically employing single-phase 110 kV(±8x2%)/27 kV transformers (TR) and the RTS is divided into single-side fed phase-insulated sections, typically 20 to 30 km long [1], [2]. Consequently, the single-phase transformer-based RTS exhibits following deficiencies: 1) on the RTS side -voltage drops reducing the traction vehicles power and split sections with neutral fields; and 2) on DS side -voltage unbalance in DS increasing in severity during recuperative braking.…”

“…The promising topology of the AC traction substation was introduced in [1]. This TSS (Traction SubStation) is especially designed for using in the Czech Republic (single phase 25 kV / 50 Hz) where is assumed feed from a distribution power grid.…”

“…However, the open delta configuration does not ensure full symmetrization, for these reasons new advanced TSS topologies are being tested in the Czech Republic. One perspective topology is traction substation with electronic balancer introduced in [1] and [2]. This paper deals with the AC TSS (traction substation) with electronic balancer.…”

“…The main part of this paper is concern to derivation of the symmetrization method and equations required for the balancer unit. An extension of important knowledge for the already known topology and for the advanced topology, were presented in [1], [2], [3], [4], [5].…”
