Application of Microfluidics in Immunoassay: Recent Advancements

Abstract: In recent years, point-of-care testing has played an important role in immunoassay, biochemical analysis, and molecular diagnosis, especially in low-resource settings. Among various point-of-care-testing platforms, microfluidic chips have many outstanding advantages. Microfluidic chip applies the technology of miniaturizing conventional laboratory which enables the whole biochemical process including reagent loading, reaction, separation, and detection on the microchip. As a result, microfluidic platform has b… Show more

“…Additionally, a strain gauge was 3D printed onto the PET beam and connected with a coil and magnet to the patterned printed circuit board. With the help of polyjet technology, Pinto et al developed a rapid manufacturing method of microfluidic substrates embedded with liquid metals [86,87]. Guo et al explained a simple method for fabricating microfluid strain sensors widely used in lab-on-chip devices for strain and pressure measurement using inkjet printing [88].…”

“…In active systems, the fluid transport is achieved using actuators or external power supplies, like when assisted by pumps. Passive systems operate without a power source, rather taking advantage of natural phenomena like capillary pressure, surface tension or gravity, resulting in simpler devices ( Kant and Abalde-Cela, 2018 ; Narayanamurthy et al, 2020 ; Shi et al, 2021 ). Therefore, when fast and highly sensitive techniques such as SERS are integrated with a microfluidic system, there is a real possibility to obtain true POCT devices.…”

“…Alternatively, the microfluidic approach is well suited for on-site clinical diagnosis because of its inherent attributes of portability, low sample/reagent volumes, and automated processing. 20 To this end, extensive research efforts have been made over the past decade to translate laboratory-quality immunoassays into a microfluidic format. 21–24…”
