A review of cardiac troponin I detection by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy: Under the spotlight of point-of-care testing

Abstract: Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a biomarker widely related to acute myocardial infarction (AMI), one of the leading causes of death around the world. Point-of-care testing (POCT) of cTnI not only demands a short turnaround time for its detection but the highest accuracy levels to set expeditious and adequate clinical decisions. The analytical technique Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) possesses several properties that tailor to the POCT format, such as its flexibility to couple with rapid assay platform… Show more

“…UA and cTn are typical biomarkers for gout and AMI, respectively. [42][43][44][45][46][47] However, the goldstandard methods used in clinic cannot be used to give rapid results in the home. Together with a homemade centrifugal device and hand-held Raman spectrometer, the 3D-graphene/Al-AAO substrate was used to create a home detection system to rapidly detect the amount of UA and cTn in the blood of a patient.…”

“…An important advantage of modern highly sensitive troponin immunotests is the ability to detect cardiac troponin molecules in noninvasively obtained biological material (oral fluid, urine, sweat) [ 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 ]. When receiving these biomaterials, a number of advantages can be noted: the process is non-invasive, atraumatic, and painless, no specially trained medical personnel is required, and the preliminary diagnostics can be tested at home (test strips).…”

“…Moreover, HS methods for determining cTns have raised the issue of the need to take into account the gender, age and circadian characteristics of cTns concentration when using rapid algorithms for the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome [23,24,[27][28][29][30]. Increased sensitivity has also contributed to the introduction of new data on the diagnostic capabilities of non-canonical to cardiovascular diseases biological fluids such as urine [31,32], oral fluid [33][34][35][36] and sweat [36] creating the foundation for further research on non-invasive diagnostic methods.…”
