The present study is focusing on evaluating theoretically and experimentally stability and type of interactions between the epoxy resin bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA)‐polyaminoamide anticorrosive coating and high strength low alloy steel surface 15CDV6. The coated steel samples were subjected to a harsh environment of an electrolyte solution of 3 wt % NaCl to simulate the corrosive marine environment. The performance of the epoxy coating was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EIS results revealed the occurrence of some deterioration in the film after subjecting it to a harsh environment for 4392 h, because the impedance of the coating dropped by about 1.4 kΩ.cm2. Surface morphological study of metallic specimens before and after exposing to the simulated marine environment (3 wt % NaCl) was carried out using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and optical microscope (OM) methods. The interactions between DGEBA‐polyaminoamide and the metallic surface were further carried out using computation modeling such as density functional theory (DFT)‐based quantum chemical calculations, Monte Carlo (MC), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Results showed that DGEBA‐polyaminoamide possesses a strong tendency to adhere and inhibits the corrosive dissolution of 15CDV6 steel surface in the stimulated marine environment. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organic corrosion inhibitors are one of the five ways, besides material selection, design, cathodic protection and coatings, to protect materials against corrosion. Corrosion is an ubiquitous phenomena that deteriorates all materials, metals, plastics, glass and concrete. The costs of corrosion are tremendous and amounts to 4.0% of gross domestic product (GDP) in USA. The similar losses of GDP are noted in all countries around the world. At this point of time, there is no way to completely stop the corrosion processes. Some new solutions can only slow this process. Organic corrosion inhibitors are widely used in industry because of their effectiveness at wide range of temperatures, compatibility with protected materials, good solubility in water, low costs and relatively low toxicity. Organic corrosion inhibitors adsorb on the surface to form protective film which displace water and protect it against deteriorating. Effective organic corrosion inhibitors contain nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur and phosphorus with lone electron pairs as well can contain structural moieties with π-electrons that interact with metal favoring the adsorption process. This review presents mechanisms and monitoring of corrosion, laboratory methods for corrosion study, relationship between structure and efficacy of corrosion inhibitions, theoretical approach to design new inhibitors and some aspects of biocorrosion.

Incorporation of nanofillers into the organic coatings might enhance their barrier performance, by decreasing the porosity and zigzagging the diffusion path for deleterious species. Thus, the coatings containing nanofillers are expected to have significant barrier properties for corrosion protection and reduce the trend for the coating to blister or delaminate. On the other hand, high hardness could be obtained for metallic coatings by producing the hard nanocrystalline phases within a metallic matrix. This article presents a review on recent development of nanocomposite coatings, providing an overview of nanocomposite coatings in various aspects dealing with the classification, preparative method, the nanocomposite coating properties, and characterization methods. It covers potential applications in areas such as the anticorrosion, antiwear, superhydrophobic area, self-cleaning, antifouling/antibacterial area, and electronics. Finally, conclusion and future trends will be also reported.
