Application of Marine Microbial Natural Products in Cosmetics

Abstract: As the market size of the cosmetics industry increases, the safety and effectiveness of new products face higher requirements. The marine environment selects for species of micro-organisms with metabolic pathways and adaptation mechanisms different from those of terrestrial organisms, resulting in their natural products exhibiting unique structures, high diversity, and significant biological activities. Natural products are usually safe and non-polluting. Therefore, considerable effort has been devoted to sear… Show more

“…The Macrocystis pyrifera ferment is generated from sustainably harvested Macrocystis pyrifera , a brown kelp rich in biological actives, including polysaccharides, minerals, and organic acids. Macrocystis pyrifera is combined with other ingredients such as tocopheryl succinate (Vitamin E) and B‐carotene 10 . These ingredients are fermented using a proprietary process that includes utilizing marine microorganisms in phases, adding sonochemistry as a form of energy to the mix, and controlling pH and dissolved oxygen.…”

“…Macrocystis pyrifera is combined with other ingredients such as tocopheryl succinate (Vitamin E) and B-carotene. 10 These ingredients are fermented using a proprietary process that includes utilizing marine microorganisms in phases, adding sonochemistry as a form of energy to the mix, and controlling pH and dissolved oxygen. The beneficial biotransformation step generates secondary metabolites and biologically active by-products that add efficacy to the ferment and help make the nutrients from the kelp-ferment more bioavailable to the skin.…”

“…Similarly, lycopene, a robust natural antioxidant, can counterbalance reactive oxygen species. These attributes position it as a promising, supplementary component in sunscreens, conferring benefits for improved skin health and texture enhancement [59]. Astaxanthin acts as a shield against wrinkles and blemish formation and plays a pivotal role in protecting the skin against the deleterious impacts of photooxidation triggered by ultraviolet (UV) rays.…”

“…Most cosmetics contain growth stimulators, organic as well as inorganic components, and are stored in a humid atmosphere which stimulates the growth of microorganisms. The microbial contamination of these personal care products deteriorates their quality ultimately affecting human health and resulting in severe consequences [3] Cosmetics products become prone to contamination either during manufacturing in a container or during use by the consumer. In the first case, the manufacturer of the product must adopt all the safety protocols to avoid contamination so that the best quality of the product must be ensured.…”
