Application of lateral tarsoconjunctival flap to correct ocular complications of Madelung's disease

Abstract: Rationale:Madelung's disease is a specific type of benign symmetric lipomatosis, which is characterized by overgrowing fat distributed at the neck and shoulder. This excessive fat accumulation may occur in different regions, including vital organs, such as the larynx, trachea, or the orbits. Surgery is usually performed to correct the esthetic or functional concern of the affected area. There are only few case reports mentioned about the orbital involvement of this disease. “…Multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL), a rare benign abnormal fat distribution disorder, is clinically characterized by very slow growth of multiple, symmetrical, and non-encapsulated adipose tissue in the face, neck, shoulder, back, and abdomen. 1,2 Dr. Brodie reported the first MSL case in 1846 and Dr. Madelung summarized 33 cases in 1888, so it was also named Madelung disease. 3 The MSL incidence rate is 1:25,000 in the Mediterranean region but is very low among Asian populations, and the age of onset is usually between 30 and 70 years old in men, occurring up to 30 times more frequently in men than in women.…”
