Application of Hybrid FEM-DIC Method for Assessment of Low Cost Building Structures

Abstract: In this work pre-operating tests of low-cost building structures have been presented. A hybrid experimentalnumerical methodology has been used to determine the influence of an external, environmental load on the overall endurance of a hangar made of self-supporting metal-plates. Numerical simulations carried out on a FEM model have been consequently verified by measurements of the structure performed with the 3D Digital Image Correlation method and as a result, a detailed, calibrated FEM model of the structure… Show more

“…Such structures were initially built as temporary buildings used for military purposes. Direct adaptation of this technology for civil purposes, combined with extending the lifetime and changing of environmental conditions, have caused design problems, especially in terms of stability and load transfers [1][2][3]. In order to ensure safety and proper operational parameters during lifetime, hybrid experimental-numerical methods are being used in design and exploitation stages [4].…”

“…Therefore, we can observe increasing use of the full field optical measurement methods for determination of displacements and deformations in critical areas of objects, for advanced evaluation of numerical models [5,6]. In the case of measurement of large engineering structures, the most commonly used technique is Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method [1,7]. This method is characterized by scalability of sensitivity and dimensions of fields of view [8].…”

“…The test of a full scale model of arch consisting of 4 trapezoid profiles of 12 m span and 6 m radius and its numerical evaluation was a subject of paper [13]. The simplified distribution of internal forces assumed in this paper (simulating a uniform snow load) is shown in Fig.…”

“…The digital image correlation measurement method has found broad application in experimental mechanics. In the field of civil engineering, there are existing applications in measurement of large structures with or without targets [4,7], displacement measurement of flexible bridges [8,9], assessment of building structures [10] and structural dynamics [11,12].…”
