Application of High <i>T</i>c Superconductor in Accelerators: Status and Prospects

Abstract: Synopsis:With the continuing improvement of properties of High T c Superconductors (HTS), their application to accelerator technology is becoming increasingly attractive. While the medium to long-term goal for their use in this field will be for high field magnets, the materials now available enable a number of specific applications which benefit from their characteristics and make them a valid alternative to conventional Low T c Superconductors (LTS). If devices for electrical utilities generally seek to use … Show more

“…For large currents parallel tapes are required; some transposition could be achieved by winding tapes helically on a cylinder. For an operating temperature of 4.5 K, chosen to enable a fair comparison with Nb-Ti, the can be taken to be (assuming a favorably aligned field of 3 T or less) [7]. Applying values of , and that are dominated by the large Ag-5Au fraction, and , gives .…”

“…2) Bi-2212: This material has better current-carrying characteristics than Bi-2223 at 4.5 K [7]. Other advantages are that it can be made in the form of multi-filamentary wire that can be cabled, and it is not sensitive to the direction of magnetic field.…”

“…MgB 2 can be manufactured in the form of a tape or round conductor, thus allowing several cabling possibilities [29][30][31]. Possibilities for cabling Bi-based superconductors must not be forgotten either [32] as these are also candidates for high field or high temperature applications [33,34]. Additionally, all these conductors offer a wide variety of aspect ratios.…”
