Application of fuzzy logic and data mining techniques as tools for qualitative interpretation of acid mine drainage processes

Abstract: In this article, a set of clustering algorithms based on Fuzzy Logic and Data Mining are applied, allowing to obtain data in the form of linguistic rules and charts about the behaviour of the Tinto and Odiel river estuary (SW Spain) affected by Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). In order to provide researchers with no skills on data mining techniques an easy and intuitive interpretation, we have developed a computer tool based on fuzzy logic that allows immediate qualitative analysis of the data contained in a data fro… Show more

“…The models based on fuzzy logic are appropriated to deal with the knowledge base that result from the characterization of these complex and heterogeneous systems (Aroba et al 2007;Peche andRodríguez 2009 andValente andLeal Gomes 2009a). Fuzzy logic allows the incorporation of qualitative information, for instance obtained through field observations, which is better described using natural language (Demicco and Klir 2004;Zadeh 1973).…”

“…3. This graphical fuzzy rule can be interpreted as follows: IF x is small or big and y is average THEN z is very small. The authors have demonstrated that this computer tool is capable of providing interpretations of the behavior of variables in complex systems, which were not visible through a classical statistical analysis of the measurements,Grande et al (2005a,Andújar and Barragán (2005),Andújar and Bravo (2005),Andújar et al (2006Andújar et al ( , 2007,Aroba et al (2007),Jiménez et al (2009).…”

“…The IPB is one of the largest metallogenic regions of the world, with numerous giant and supergiant massive sulphide ore deposits (Sáez et al 1999), comprising 1700 Mt of sulphide reserves (Pinedo-Vara 1963). Consequently, the regional drainage network is strongly affected by AMD and acid rock drainage (ARD), as described by several authors: Elbaz-Poulichet et al (1999,2000,2001), Davis et al (2000), Grande et al (2003aGrande et al ( , 2003bGrande et al ( , 2005aGrande et al ( , 2005bGrande et al ( , 2010aGrande et al ( , 2010bGrande et al ( , 2010cGrande et al ( , 2010dGrande et al ( , 2010e, 2011aGrande et al ( , 2011b, Leblanc et al (2000), Borrego et al (2002), Sáinz et al (2002Sáinz et al ( , 2003aSáinz et al ( , 2003bSáinz et al ( , 2004Sáinz et al ( , 2005, Olıás et al (2004Olıás et al ( , 2005aOlıás et al ( , 2005bOlıás et al ( , 2006, Aroba et al (2007), Jiménez et al (2009), de la Torre et al (2009, Carro et al (2011) and Grande (2011).…”
