Application of cyclodextrins in chiral capillary electrophoresis

Abstract: CE represents a very powerful separation tool in the area of chiral separations. CD-mediated chiral CE is a continuously flourishing technique within the frame of the electromigration methods. In this review, a brief overview of the synthetic procedures leading to modified CDs is provided first. Next, selected aspects related to the utilization of CDs in chiral CE are discussed specifically in the view of recently published data. Advantages of CDs and basic principles of chiral CE are remained. The topic of th… Show more

“…Research to provide understandings about interactions between CDs and enantiomers and then to elucidate chiral recognition processes has been carried out [7,8]. The approaches used in this field are mainly nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy [9][10][11], molecular modelling [12][13][14], and computer simulations [8].…”

“…The combination of chiral CE with molecular modelling and NMR experiments or other supporting techniques (e.g. circular dichroism and isothermal titration calorimetry) provides descriptive information about the mechanism responsible for the enantioresolution of a chiral compound with a particular CD [8,15].…”

“…Thus, it is critical to choose a suitable chiral selector (CS) to create a chiral environment. Many compounds with chiral center can be used as chiral selectors (CSs), such as cyclodextrins (CDs) [17][18][19], crown ether [20], copper-amino acid complexes [21], antibiotics [22][23][24], chiral micelles [25], and proteins [26,27]. Among these chiral selectors, natural CDs and their derivatives have been used extensively in chiral separations.…”

“…Molecular recognition of substrates by cyclodextrins occurs by noncovalent interactions in the hydrophobic cavity of the water-soluble, cyclic sugar oligomers. Some modified cyclodextrins have successfully been employed for enantiomer separations in several areas of science and technology 3,4 . The inclusion complex of host-guest systems serves our understanding of the cooperation of several weak forces working between a receptor and substrate, which include dipole-dipole, electrostatic, van der Waals, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions 5 .…”
